Keeter places 2nd at ASICS University Nationals

AKRON, Ohio — Augsburg College wrestler Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho) placed second in the Greco-Roman 70-kilogram (154-pound) weight class at the ASICS University National Championships, held on Friday at the University of Akron.

With his second-place finish, Keeter will qualify to compete at the ASICS U.S. World Team Trials, which will be held June 21-23 at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. At the trials, he will be able to compete in either the 66 kg (145.5 pounds) or 74 kg (163 pounds) classes, both Olympic-level weight classes.

Competing for the Minnesota Storm club, Keeter opened his run to the finals with an 11-4, technical-fall victory over Michael Cross (Marines), then scored a 7-0, technical-fall win over Shohei Takagi (Patriot Elite Wrestling Club), a collegiate wrestler at Division I George Mason (Va.), in the semifinals. In the best two-of-three finals, Keeter lost to Kendrick Sanders (New York Athletic Club/U.S. Olympic Education Center) in an 8-0 technical-fall loss and 2:14 pin.

“It was great, being there with all those big-name guys who have competed at the international level. It was fun,” Keeter said.

Keeter also competed in the 70-kilogram freestyle tournament at the ASICS University Nationals, going 3-2 in the event.

Keeter earned NCAA Division III All-American honors with a third-place national tournament finish at 141 pounds in 2012. He is 69-30 in his Auggie career. Keeter was a two-time Idaho state high school champion and won the USA Wrestling Western Regional Greco-Roman title in 2010.
