No. 2 Hawkeyes down Jackrabbits

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Second-ranked Iowa won two matches by fall and added a major decision to down South Dakota State, 28-15, in a college wrestling dual Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes improved to 7-0 in duals this season while SDSU dropped to 1-5 overall. All five of the Jackrabbits’ dual losses have come against teams currently ranked in the top 25, including three in the top five.

Iowa took an early 9-0 lead as Thomas Gilman and Cory Clark, both of whom are ranked second in their respective weight classes, picked up wins. Gilman pinned SDSU’s Kahlen Morris in the 125-pound match, while Clark claimed a 4-1 decision over Brance Simms, who came into the match ranked 15th at 133 pounds.

SDSU got on the board as former Hawkeye Seth Gross used a riding-time advantage to score a 3-2 decision over Iowa’s Logan Ryan at 141 pounds.

Top-ranked 149-pounder Brandon Sorensen gave the Hawkeyes a 13-3 lead after recording an 8-0 major decision over Alex Kocer.

The Jackrabbits pulled to within 13-9 with back-to-back victories in the middle weights. Sixth-ranked Cody Pack scored a 6-5 decision against Edwin Cooper Jr. at 157 pounds, and Luke Zilverberg hung on for a 4-2 win over Burke Paddock in the 165-pound bout.

Iowa regained the momentum as sixth-ranked 174-pounder Alex Meyer recorded a 5-2 decision over David Kocer, which was followed by eighth-ranked Sammy Brooks notching a quick fall over the Jackrabbits’ Brady Ayers in the 184-pound division.

SDSU’s final win of the evening came in the 197-pound weight class, where 13th-ranked Nate Rotert won by forfeit.

In the final match of the night, Iowa heavyweight Sam Stoll was awarded a victory when the Jackrabbits’ Alex Macki was disqualified for multiple stalling infractions.

The Jackrabbits return to action Sunday, wrestling three duals at the South Dakota Showcase. Competition begins at noon at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, with SDSU scheduled to wrestle against Dakota Wesleyan, Northern State and Augustana.
