Slovak elections
The centre-left Smer party won a parliamentary majority in Slovakia’s elections on Saturday (10 March). The prime minister will be Robert Fico, who led a coalition government in 2006-10.
Low-carbon roadmap
Poland refused to approve targets for reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions in 2020-50 at a meeting of environment ministers on Friday (9 March). Poland argues that member states should be given more flexibility in how they achieve cuts.
Migration crises
EU home-affairs ministers have agreed to develop an early-warning system for migration emergencies. The mechanism was one of a set of measures designed to strengthen solidarity among member states agreed at the ministerial meeting on Thursday (8 March).
Organised crime
The European Commission on Monday (12 March) proposed an EU-wide regime for the confiscation of assets obtained from serious or organised crime. The new rules would make it easier for member states to seize property linked to criminal activities. The approval of member states and MEPs is needed.
GM rules
EU environment ministers failed to agree on a compromise on rules allowing member states to ban genetically modified organisms when they met on Friday.
Human rights
EU foreign ministers on Saturday endorsed a proposal by Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy chief, to appoint an EU envoy for human rights.
Myanmar sanctions
The European Court of Justice on Tuesday (13 March) ruled that EU sanctions against Pye Phyo Tay Za, a citizen of Myanmar, were unlawful because they were based solely on his family connection to the ruling military junta.
