Mogherini: Europe-US relations now in ‘different phase’

EU’s top diplomat says Washington and Brussels are still doing ‘big work’ to stabilize the Middle East and Africa.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Donald Trump’s presidency has brought Europe and the U.S. into a “different phase of relations,” in a CNN interview Tuesday.

However there’s still common ground between the EU and the U.S., primarily on the economy, Mogherini said.

From the economy to security, to the big work we’re doing to stabilize places in the Middle East and in Africa, there is a common interest to work together,” said the Italian diplomat. “There are also things in which we have different views.”

Mogherini said that U.S. Vice President Mike Pence told her on his visit to Brussels in February that Washington was interested in “deepening and strengthening” cooperation with the EU.

Cuts to the U.S. budget for humanitarian and development aid will affect the security of Americans, she said, but it’s up to American politicians to reconcile their differences in views.
