Barcelona target Piatek continues scoring streak to emulate Batistuta feat

The Poland striker has taken to Serie A like a duck to water, bringing back memories of Fiorentina’s free-scoring Argentine idol

Krzysztof Piatek became the first player since Gabriel Batistuta to score in each of the first seven games of a Serie A season as his sensational streak continued for Genoa.

The Poland international joined Genoa from Cracovia in June and has hit the ground running in Italy, with his opener against Parma on Sunday his 13th strike in eight games across all competitions.

Piatek’s tally includes nine Serie A goals after netting in seven consecutive matches, a run that sees him at the top of the league’s scoring charts ahead of some of the world’s elite strikers.

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, in comparison, has hit four so far, with Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne on five and Argentine duo Mauro Icardi and Gonzalo Higuain have one and two goals in Serie A respectively. 

The striker also finds himself in esteemed historical company, with the last player to achieve this feat from the start of the season being Batistuta in 1994-95.

The Argentina great extended his run to 11 games and ended the campaign with 26 goals for Fiorentina as they finished 10th in Serie A.

Tenth is curiously where Genoa found themselves going into Sunday’s clash with Parma, with Piatek’s goals the high point of a rather unstable start to the new season. 

Piatek has already been linked with a move to number of Champions League clubs, including La Liga giants Barcelona.

His form in Italy has also led to inevitable comparisons with fellow Poland international Robert Lewandowski, who has a comparatively three to his name in the Bundesliga so far.
