Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Manchester United to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager.
Solskjaer continued his unbeaten start as interim boss with a narrow 1-0 win at Leicester on Sunday, making it 22 points from a possible 24 during his short time in charge.
The Red Devils are now just two points off the Premier League’s top four, having been 11 points adrift when Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho in December.
And Keown, who played against Solskjaer at the height of Man United and Arsenal’s intense Premier League rivalry, believes the Old Trafford hierarchy need look no further in their search for a new manager.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done more than enough in his first 10 games as Manchester United caretaker manager to prove he should get the job full-time,” Keown wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“His team are displaying the traits of Sir Alex Ferguson’s great teams. We rarely saw that under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
“United have a manager now who gets this club’s DNA. Winning 2-1 at Arsenal in the FA Cup, with less than 20 minutes to go, Solskjaer went for broke and threw on Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to finish the Gunners off. Who does that remind you of?
“When they have not been at their best, this team have dug deep and found ways to get the job done.
“This job clearly does not faze Solskjaer. He is oozing confidence and has a brilliant backroom team.”
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is thought to be one of the leading candidates for the permanent job at United.
However, Keown expects the Argentine to stay loyal to Spurs.
“What are [Man United] waiting for? They may still be holding out for Mauricio Pochettino, but I honestly do not believe that he is going to leave everything he has built at Tottenham when they are about to move into a wonderful new stadium.
“Solskjaer deserves to be given a chance. He is an icon of this club’s past and can guide them to a successful future.”
