IPL 2023 Qualifier 2: Shubman Gill brings up his 3rd ton of season against Mumbai Indians

Shubman Gill scored his 3rd Indian Premier League century against the Mumbai Indians in the second Qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.

Gill, who had scored his other two tons against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore, scored his latest 100 with 8 sixes and 4 fours in 49 balls. The swashbuckling batter would ultimately depart for 129 off just 60 balls, holing out to Tim David, the same man who had earlier dropped him.

In contrast, for his century against RCB in the last match of the group stage, he had gotten to a century with 5 fours and 8 sixes as GT eliminated RCB from the competition with Mumbai Indians clinching the last play off spot.

The former KKR batter also became the second Indian to score three or more centuries in a single season sitting just behind Virat Kohli’s four 100s in the 2016 season.

“Got a good total, hopefully we will defend this. We have played our best cricket when we have lost and this is one of those days. You have to know which side to target, if it’s bigger boundaries and they bowl in good areas, look for doubles, smaller boundaries look to take it on,” Gill said wearing the Orange Cap after he became the 2nd Indian to breach the 850-run mark after Kohli.

“The new ball held up a bit, there was not much grass on that wicket, the ball was coming on nicely and with the outfield wet it stopped swinging after 2 overs. I wish this was possible – I will carry it everywhere (On the Ahmedabad pitch),” he added in the mid-innings break.
