Reims’ Hugo Ekitike was not convinced by Newcastle move

RMC Sport report that Hugo Ekitike’s decision to remain at Reims this winter despite strong interest from Newcastle was in part due to his apprehension regarding the club’s precarious league position.

Talks between the two clubs for the 19-year-old forward had been ongoing since the start of the window, with the Magpies’ initial €20m offers being turned down.

The Champaign club were pushing for a €30m deal excluding bonuses and a loan back until the end of the current season. On Monday night, an agreement was reached for €40m, but Reims were still looking to have the forward – who has 8 goals this season – loaned back.

In addition, Ekitike himself was not convinced by the move given that the club remain in a relegation spot, nor was he interested in the Magpies’ project.
