Barbarians: Alun Wyn Jones to join Premiership stars in Eddie Jones’ squad

The most capped Test player of all-time, Alun Wyn Jones, will make his Barbarians debut at 37, along with several Premiership stars.

Eddie Jones takes charge of the Barbarians, who will face off against a World XV, coached by former All Blacks coach Sir Steve Hansen, on 28 May.

Baabaas debut

Wales lock Jones is in his 19th year of professional rugby and is yet to represent the famous invitational team but looks to finally get his chance.

“I’d love to feature for the Barbarians. I’d love to win a Champions Cup, and I’d love to get to another World Cup and make a fist of it,” he said back in 2018.

According to the BBC, Jones will be joined in the squad by fellow Welshman Rhys Webb.

SportsMail have added to the list with England and Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care also joining the side, along with clubmate Joe Marler.

Quins and Springbok centre Andre Esterhuizen is also keen to feature for the Baabaas.

Red Rose and All Black stars

Former England coach Eddie Jones has reportedly added several players who featured in the Red Rose squad during his tenure. Dan Cole, Sam Simmonds, Jack Nowell and Jonny May have all reportedly signed up to feature in the match.

The availability of all the players listed will depend on whether their club’s reach the United Rugby Championship and Premiership finals, with all three fixtures taking place on the same weekend.

Former All Blacks pivot Aaron Cruden will play for the Baabaas against his former coach, Hansen.

Fijian superstar Semi Radradra, meanwhile, is expected to play for the World XV after being courted by both coaches.

Return to Twickenham

The clash at Twickenham will be Jones’ first since the RFU sacked him at the end of 2022.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Canada coach Kingsley Jones will assist the Barbarians.

Jones has been head coach of Canada since 2017, and has a distinguished coaching career which has also seen him lead Newport Gwent Dragons, Russia, Sale Sharks and Doncaster.

While Eddie Jones has found an assistant coach for his one-off match in charge of the Barbarians, one of his assistants in Australia has departed.

Laurie Fisher confirmed that he would not be working with the Wallabies in 2023.

“Disappointed to not be continuing the journey with the @wallabies thru to the World Cup. Will play my part by ensuring all @BrumbiesRugby players are in a program that maximises their progress & development to be the best they can be. Enjoyed the brief opportunity.” Fisher tweeted.
