Nice condemn fans’ Emiliano Sala chant during game against Saint-Étienne

Nice have released a statement this evening condemning their fans’ shocking chanting about the late Emiliano Sala during tonight’s 4-2 win over Saint-Étienne.

During the 9th minute, a section of the Nice support sang the following, a few days after losing the Coupe de France final to Nantes, his former club:

“He’s an Argentine, who can’t swim well, Emiliano under the water [sous l’eau].”

The chant is a twist on what is usually sung by Nantes and Bordeaux fans in tribute to their former forward, who died in January of 2019 in a plane accident over the English Channel.

“He’s an Argentine, who never gives up, Emiliano Sala, Emiliano Sala.”

In response, the club has expressed their support to Sala’s friends and family and have “strongly condemned” the chant: “The club does not recognise at all its values nor those of the red and black family in this unthinkable and despicable provocation from a minority of its supporters.”
