Antero Henrique’s role decisive in Kylian Mbappé’s renewal

L’Équipe report today that former Paris Saint-Germain director of sport Antero Henrique’s role in convincing Kylian Mbappé to renew his contract was decisive in the forward’s u-turn.

The Portugal native, who first brought the forward to the French capital in 2017, was called upon by the club’s Qatari management at a point where Mbappé was all but heading for the exit door after the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Henrique’s intervention would then become the “new elements” that the 23-year-old was publicly discussing last month, at which point he was in negotiations with both clubs.

The prospect of breaking new records in France and at PSG and winning the club’s first Champions League were put forward. In addition, negotiators insisted on his own responsibility towards French football as well as the project they would be putting in place around him.

In the meantime, Real Madrid put forward an offer consisting of a five-year deal with a €130m signing-on fee, as well as control over almost all of his image rights. In the end, PSG’s offer would see him have slightly less control as well as a marginally lower signing-on fee.
