Paris Saint-Germain’s loss to Rennes on Sunday evening marked Kylian Mbappé’s return to action after a week-long holiday, the French international having come on as a substitute as a substitute early on in the second half.
Shortly before the forward was brought on to replace Hugo Ekitike, the home side’s manager Bruno Génésio took the opportunity to say a few words to Les Bleus’ World Cup final hat-trick hero.
Speaking to the press after his team’s slender victory, Génésio explained that he had approached Mbappé to congratulate him on his achievements in football as well as the person he had developed into, the two having crossed paths at the Clairefontaine national training centre previously.
“I congratulated him for everything he’s doing and everything he’s going to do still. Aside from the great player he is, he’s also someone who I appreciate. Because at his age, with everything he’s going through, he’s staying humble and down-to-earth. It’s not the first time I’m seeing him, I met him once at Clairefontaine. He stopped to say hello. These are the gestures which say a lot about his personality and his manners.”
After coming on, the World Cup top scorer was unable to change the course of the game, having lost his duel against his now-ex-international teammate Steve Mandanda. PSG now see their lead at the top cut to three points over Lens.
