ROH Announces TV Title Bout, Tanahashi For Upcoming Tapings

On Wednesday afternoon, Ring Of Honor (ROH) announced a new Television Championship match and one of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) top Superstars for their upcoming post-Death Before Dishonor television taping.

ROHWrestling.com issued the following announcements today:

Sabin To Challenge Martinez For TV Title At Death Before Dishonor

During the gauntlet to crown the number one contenders for the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship, Alex Shelley suffered nerve damage in his gums and mouth, a concussion, and jaw injuries, putting him on the shelf. Shelley was competing in the match without Motor City Machine Guns partner Chris Sabin because Sabin was competing in the Best of Super Juniors tournament, where he won three matches and reestablished himself as a top singles star.

Following the injury, Sabin got Shelley’s blessing to follow this path. A former World Champion in not only tag team and singles action, Sabin earned a future World Television Championship shot by defeating former two-time ROH World Television Champion Silas Young in a number one contender’s match. And following the despicable blindside attack on he and Shelley in Atlanta, Sabin wants to cash it in against the largest man to ever hold the World Television Championship!

ROH WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION PUNISHMENT MARTINEZ vs. CHRIS SABIN

It is hard to hide a near 6’7”, 265 lbs frame but Punishment Martinez did just that, lurking in the shadows until the time was right to attack the number one contender and his long-time best friend and tag team partner following an emotional series of revelations by Alex Shelley about the status of his professional wrestling career.

Martinez, who captured the title at State of the Art: Dallas by pinning Silas Young in the main event, was looking to fire the first shot and hit Sabin both physically and proverbially where it hurts. Now, Sabin, knowing his partner is taking a sabbatical, has quickly climbed the singles ranks and not only is motivated by gold but also by the fact that he could get revenge against Martinez!

Last year’s Death Before Dishonor in Las Vegas saw both men pull the equivalent of three 7s or straight flushes: Martinez dispatching of “Switchblade” Jay White in a Vegas Street Fight to end their feud while Sabin and Shelley defeated the Young Bucks to win the ROH World Tag Team Titles. But this year, someone will hit the jackpot while the other will draw a bad beat. Who will walk out of Las Vegas World Television Champion? G1 Climax Winner Hiroshi Tanahashi Signed For Death Before Dishonor TV Taping In Vegas

Fresh off his victory in the G1 Climax, Hiroshi Tanahashi makes his return to Ring of Honor at the Death Before Dishonor international television taping in Las Vegas on Sept. 29.

Tanahashi has held the IWGP Heavyweight Title a record seven times and has been one of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s top stars for nearly 20 years. As his performance in the G1 Climax tournament this summer showed, the veteran remains one of the best competitors in the world.

Tanahashi went 7-1-1 in the G1 Climax, defeating Kota Ibushi in the finals to win the prestigious tournament for the third time. With the victory, Tanahashi put himself in the driver’s seat for a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 13 on Jan. 4 at the Tokyo Dome. It would be the 10th time that Tanahashi has wrestled in the main event on NJPW’s biggest show of the year.

He has competed in ROH a number of times over the past four years, with his most recent appearances occurring during the Honor United UK tour in May. Tanahashi’s last appearance in an ROH ring in the U.S. took place at Supercard of Honor in New Orleans in April, as he and Jay Lethal teamed up in a losing effort against ROH World Tag Team Champions Jay and Mark Briscoe.

Who will Tanahashi test his considerable skills against at the Death Before Dishonor TV taping? Join us in person in Las Vegas to find out!
