Five other Mustangs place at MSU Moorhead Dragon Open
MOORHEAD, Minn. – Kyle Begin used four pins on Saturday to take first place at 165 pounds in the white division (freshman) at the MSU-Moorhead Dragon open. Southwest Minnesota State had a strong showing as the Mustangs had five other wrestlers that placed.
In the red division (upper class), Justin Reinsma finished second at 133 pounds, Ethan Hildebrandt took fourth place at 141 pounds, and Micah Larson took third place at 197 pounds. In the white division, Beau Buysee placed second at 149 pounds, Kyle Begin took first at 165 pounds, and Travis Longtin took sixth place at 165 pounds.
Begin, who wrestled unattached had pins at 4:50, 1:04, 2:47 in his first three matches and his fourth and final pin came just 1:16 into the championship bout. Begin pinned Joshua Chandler (Augsburg College) Matt Mason (Itasca CC), Dominic Sipe (Rochester CC), and Mitchell Rechtzigel (Augustana) to earn first place.
Justin Reinsma fell to Justin Scherkenback (North Dakota State) by a 5-3 decision in the championship to take second. Reinsma received a bye in the first round and followed the bye with a 7-6 decision over Philippe Walker (MSUM) and a 5-3 decision over Toossaporn Suparat (Augsburg College) to reach the championship match.
Ethan Hildebrandt fell to Tom Kuehn (Augsburg College) by a 3-1 decision at 141 pounds to take fourth place. Hildebrandt pinned Eric Ellington (St. Cloud State) at 1:35 and followed with a 7-5 decision over Rashad Kennedy (Augsburg College). Hildebrandt would get pinned by Trevor Johnson (U-Mary) at 1:52 before falling to Tom Kuehn in the third place bout.
Micah Larson took third place at 197 pounds by medical forfeit over Dallas Mitchell (unattached). Larson pinned Jacob Minske (Rochester CC) at 1:07 after receiving a bye in the first round. Larson would be pinned in the semifinal match by Jayd Docken (Augustana) just 53 seconds into the match. Docken would go on to take first place while Larson took third by a medical forfeit.
Beau Buysse fell to Jacob Anderson (Augustana) by an 8-2 decision in the championship to take second place in the 149 bracket. Buysee defeated Brett Schurmann by technical fault (18-0) and followed with a 6-1 and 5-2 decision over Jayden Richter (U-Mary) and Gavin Larsen (Northern State) to reach the championship bout.
Travis Longtin fell to Josh Berg (St. Cloud State) by a close 3-2 decision in the fifth place match at 165 pounds. Longtin followed an opening round loss to Dominic Sipe with decisions over Riley Nagel (U-Mary) and D. Murakami (unattached) and a major decision over Esteban Zelaya (Ridgewater CC) before falling to Josh Berg in the fifth place match.
