Vikings’ Ramirez Jr. Advances to Semis at the Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS – In the largest meet of the season for Augustana wrestling, two Vikings advanced to day two of the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Saturday. The conclusion of the Midwest Classic is set for tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. (CT) at Nicoson Hall.

Oscar Ramirez Jr. went 3-0 at 149 pounds and will wrestle in the semifinals against Frank Yattoni of Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow. Regan Bye finished 3-1 at 165 pounds and will take on Phillip Springsteen of U-Mary tomorrow in the consolation quarterfinals.

After day one, Augustana sits in 14th out of 35 teams with 30.5 points. Wisconsin-Parkside leads the team race with 68 points, followed by Findlay (59.5) and McKendree (57.5).

Ramirez Jr. was the lone Viking to not suffer a loss on Saturday. Ramirez Jr. defeated two ranked wrestlers at 149 en route to his semifinals berth. In the second round he won by injury default over No. 7 Kyle Barkovich of UIndy and in the quarterfinals defeated No. 6 Isaiah Kemper of McKendree by a 10-6 decision. Ramirez Jr. won his opening match by a 10-5 decision over Jody McAlister of Newberry.

Bye dropped his opening match on Saturday in sudden victory, then reeled off three straight wins to move on to day two. Bye earned decisions over Richard Screptock of Tiffin and Martin Verhaeghe of Fort Hays State and finished out his day with a sudden victory win over J.A. Jones of Emmanuel.

Brandon Carroll (125), Jebben Keyes (133), Colin Ayers (141) and Lukas Poloncic (174) each finished 2-2. Carroll picked up a fall and a decision in the first two consolation rounds. Keyes picked up his first win of the season in his opening match and recorded a pin in the consolation second round. Ayers earned an opening round decision and a pin in the consolation second round. Poloncic earned a major decision in the first round and a decision in the consolation second round.

Clayton Wahlstrom (197) and Lane Lettau (285) each went 1-2 on the day. Wahlstrom recorded a pin in the first round of the consolations against Jared McKindley of Lindenwood and Lettau earned an opening match pin against Justice Horn of Northern State.
