After the great success in Beijing, Brazilian national team repeated their achievement and became the Olympic Champion for the second time in a row.
USA started much better, by leading 8:3. Hooker scored an ace and gave her team 11th point. After Fabiana’s service there was a long action, but Brazilian threw the ball out of the court. Brazilian coach stopped this bad series and took a break. After that, each team scored one ball in a row, but it was not good for Brazil as they were far behind their rivals (7:15). Americans kept efficiency in block. Brazilians played patiently, but also made a few simple mistakes. It was impossible to catch up McCutcheon’s team. They won this first set 25:11.
Brazil began with a good defense and a little lead – 3:0. Two minutes later Americans achieved a draw, but it did not last long – McCutcheon took a time out with a result 6:3 Brazil. After the first TTO Americans improved their game a little, but Brazil also didn’t slow down (10:6). McCutcheon decided about the second time out and it obviously worked, as his players spiked three points in a row and forced Jose Roberto Guimaraes to do the same thing – stop the game once more. Logan Tom made a tie 12:12, but Brazilians rebuilt their lead right away (16:12). After the second TTO it was getting only better to Brazil. Their advantage was safe and strong. Soon they triumphed in this second part 25:17.
The first point in this set was scored by Jaque. When she went to service spot, Brazil was leading 3:1. They another point by blocking Akinradewo and McCutcheon needed to say a few words to his team. After one more block on Americans, it was 8:5 Brazil. They also carried on their quite safe leverage in the next stage of this part. Danielle Scott showed up on a court to help her team, but it seemed like it was too late. Several times USA managed to reduce the difference to 2 points, but Brazil didn’t let anything bad happen to them. Soon it was 2:1 Brazil and only one set to repeat the success.
This last set was really only one big final countdown. USA were doing their best, but they didn’t stop this crazy Brazilian speed. The scenario was quite similar to the previous part – Brazil was keeping two points of a lead and once they started to enlarge this difference the result could be only one tonight. Brazil is a new “old” Olympic Champion!!
Hugh McCutcheon did not achieve the same thing as in Beijing with the men American team, but his medal collection is still impressive.
Brazil – USA 3:1 (11:25, 25:17, 25:20, 25:17)
