HERNDON, VA — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking for the public’s help in identifying who they call the “Furry Mask Bandit,” a man wanted in connection with four bank robberies over the past year, including three in northern Virginia.
According to the FBI, the man conducted the robberies between October 2018 and May 2019. All four burglaries took place at SunTrust banks located inside Safeway stores, two at the Herndon Safeway at 413 Elden St. In each robbery, the suspect approached the counter and passed a note demanding money, asking mostly for 100 dollar bills.
The suspect is described as a tall, slim male, about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall. During the robberies, he was seen wearing hoodie sweatshirts, dark pants, sunglasses and furry wigs or masks covering his face.
Investigators believe the same man robbed a SunTrust Bank inside a Gaithersburg, Maryland, Safeway on Jan. 12, and likely robbed SunTrust Bank inside the Safeway at 5821 Crossroads Center in Bailey’s Crossroads in February 2019.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the person responsible for these crimes. Residents are instructed to call the FBI at 202-278-2000 with tips.
