Sean Duffy To Resign From Congress; Child Has Heart Condition

MILWAUKEE, WI — Republican Congressman Sean Duffy (R-WI) said Monday that he will be resigning from Congress following the news that his family will need to give extra care and attention to their ninth child, who is expected in October.

In May, Duffy and spouse Rachel Campos-Duffy recently announced they were expecting their ninth child. “God isn’t done with our family yet! Baby number nine coming to the crew this fall! Rachel Campos-Duffy said it best, we aren’t crazy, we are just full of hope for America’s future,” he announced.

The Duffy family received some challenging news following their joyous announcement: their child faces a heart condition among other complications.

“Recently, we’ve learned that our baby, due in late October, will need even more love, time and attention due to complications, including a heart condition,” he said on Facebook. “With much prayer, I have decided that this is the right time for me to take a break from public service in order to be the support my wife, baby and family need right now. It is not an easy decision — because I truly love being your Congressman — but it is the right decision for my family, which is my first love and responsibility.”

Duffy said he would step down on Sept. 23, to “allow others to step forward to begin laying out their own vision and plans for leading this beautiful district and the most honest, hard-working, family-oriented, patriotic and God-fearing constituents in America.”

In 1997, Duffy appeared on The Real World: Boston, and on Road Rules: All Stars in 1998, where he met his future wife.

Sean Duffy is a Republican in Wisconsin’s seventh congressional district. He’s been in office since 2011 and serves in northwestern and central Wisconsin.

According to a WPR report, Duffy touted U.S. economic growth under President Donald Trump, appearing with him at rallies in Wisconsin and Minnesota in the last year.

Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher, a fellow Republican in the House, offered his support in a statement Monday.

“Since the first time I met him, it was clear to me that Sean Duffy was a great husband, father, and a dedicated representative for the people of Wisconsin. His decision to leave Congress is unfortunate, but Sean’s choice ultimately reflects his commitment to always putting his family first. I will miss serving with him in Congress and will pray for him, Rachel, and their growing family as they begin this next chapter of their lives,” Gallagher said in a statement.

First-term congressman Bryan Steil also had some kind words to share on Monday:

“Sean is a great friend, an unwavering champion for Wisconsin families, and most importantly, a devoted husband and father. Sean has been a great ally in Congress. His passion for bettering our nation and taking an ax to the issues that matter most will be sorely missed. I wish Sean, Rachel, and their kids nothing but the best and I will continue praying for their family,” Steil wrote Monday.
