A court in Gujarat’s Una has convicted 11 men, who were accused of burning alive a Dalit man from Ankolali village in Gir Somnath district. All the accused have been sentenced to life imprisonment. The victim, Lalji Sarvaiya was burnt alive in 2012 by 11 men from the upper caste accusing him to be responsible for the elopement of a girl from their community.
The accused had locked Lalji inside his house and set the structure on fire, killing him. Fearing more attacks from the upper caste group rest of his family had fled Ankolali and the state government had subsequently declared them displaced.
