In some parts of India, people can be killed just for sitting alongside fellow citizens. No matter how unbelievable it may sound, such incidents are a part of the social reality where caste-based inequality is rampant.

In a recent incident, a 23-year-old Dalit youth was allegedly beaten to death by a group upper caste people, because he sat alongside them, on a chair, and ate his food. According to reports, the incident happened in Tehri district of Uttrakhand on April 26.
The family of the deceased, identified as Jitender Das, alleged thathe was attacked by upper caste people during a wedding reception in Nainbagh Tehsil of the district on April 26. Jitender was taken to local community centre initially, but was referred to Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital on April 28 where he succumbed to his injuries.
