Reece Robinson has always preferred running rugby and it’s that which saw him land at the Waratahs for 2016.
Robinson last played rugby at a schoolboy level, for Randwick Boys’ High School, where he said the philosophy was not much different to the Waratahs’ today.
“It was always running rugby at Randwick. That’s the good thing about it,” he said.
“I always enjoy watching rugby, especially if it’s running rugby,” he said.
“I don’t like it when it’s too much kicking.
“You always enjoy watching it especially seeing blokes go from league to union and going really well, it’s always good.”
When it comes to successful league converts in the 15-man game, Robinson won’t have to look far for a fairly good mentor.
He’ll be vying for a backline spot alongside Wallabies World Cup fullback and former Broncos and Storm player Israel Folau, who has been a revelation since switching codes in 2013.
“He’s smashing it pretty much,” he said.
“I’m definitely going to ask him a few questions when he’s back.
“Also Kurtley (Beale) – he’s one of those players that… plays what he sees. I’m definitely going to ask him a few questions.”
The 28-year-old was a proven finisher in his time in rugby league, crossing for 57 tries in 116 games.
With a likely shift from his league spot at fullback to the wing at NSW, Robinson could be in line for more scoring opportunities, a tantalising prospect.
“Everyone loves scoring tries so, especially outside the backline they’ve got here, it would be great.
“If I get the opportunity (to start) it’s going to be awesome.
“You look at the Waratahs backline and it’s all Wallaby players and they’ve got great up and coming young fellows as well.
“There’s a lot of talent at the Tahs at the moment.”
Robinson has signed for two seasons with the Waratahs, with his deal coming up ahead of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, in which he would be eligible to play for Lebanon.

He said the possibility of returning for that tournament was one he had considered, but not necessarily at the expense of lengthening a union career.
As for donning a Wallabies jersey, Robinson isn’t counting his chickens too soon.
“Not even thinking about it at the moment,” he said.
“Hopefully I get my spot in the Waratahs, that’s what I’m focused on.”
