Party in prison: Murder convict celebrates birthday in India

He is a double-murder convict serving life imprisonment but a criminal named Pintu Tiwari recently celebrated his birthday inside a prison in the Indian state of Bihar. Is that even allowed? Social media users in India were flummoxed when the video and pictures from the party at Bihar’s Sitamarhi jail went viral on Sunday.

There was cake, of course, and gifts followed by a feast of mutton with rice.

The premise was decorated with balloons where the inmates enjoyed the feast.

Though the source of the video is unknown, many people took too Twitter to share it and raise questions over the security arrangements at the prison facilities in the state.

The video has been shot using a mobile phone which shows that the prisoners at Sitamarhi jail have access to mobile phones too. Tiwari was arrested by Patna Special Task Force ten days after he had murdered the two engineers.

According to ANI, four guards of the jail have been suspended in connection with the incident. A high-level inquiry has been reportedly ordered to find out how Tiwari and other inmates managed to hold a party while serving jail term.

An article on indiatoday.in reports: “In the past year, at least on two occasions, raids and searches that were carried inside Bihar jails led to the recovery of prohibited items like mobile phones, chargers and drugs.”

According to News18.com this is not the first time that an inmate had grabbed eyeballs fro in-jail birthday celebrations. “Recently in August, a history-sheeter by the name of Ganesh Jadhav went viral on social media after images of him celebrating his birthday inside Karnataka’s Dharwad Central Prison were widely shared on social media.”
