Tottenham maintaining their Premier League title challenge without playing at a home stadium has been nothing short of amazing, Danny Murphy has told talkSPORT.
However, unlike talkSPORT host Jim White, the former Spurs midfielder doubts his old club can actually be crowned champions this season.
Jim posed an interesting question on Monday afternoon’s show: ‘If Tottenham win the title this season, would it be a bigger achievement than when Leicester City were shock champions?’
Spurs have already defied many expectations by still being in with a shout of the title at this stage of the campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men, third in the table, currently sit just four points adrift of leaders Liverpool ahead of their game against West Ham on Monday night.
If the Reds lose it would throw the title race wide open, and Jim believes Tottenham lifting the Premier League title will be a bigger surprise than the Foxes’ famous win under Claudio Ranieri three years ago.
But asked if he agreed, Murphy said: “No.”
“I think you’re right that the enormity of it would be huge.
“The net spend, the players they’ve had out, what they’re competing against with Liverpool and Man City, I don’t undervalue the amazing achievement it would be. It would be incredible.
“But Leicester did it with a group of players who were not playing regularly in the Premier League – Danny Simpson and Danny Drinkwater were Championship players, Robert Huth played in the lower end of the Prem, Jamie Vardy was from non-league, Marc Albrighton was released by Aston Villa.
“Tottenham have got top-class international players and Leicester didn’t, it was a very, very different achievement.”
Although the former midfielder admits Spurs have already achieved something ‘amazing’ by playing so well during their two-season stint at Wembley Stadium.
He added: “What doesn’t recognition is that Tottenham aren’t at White Hart Lane, they’re at Wembley!
“I think some people underestimate how amazing it is to do that at Wembley than their own stadium. White Hart Lane was a fortress for Spurs and to adapt and still maintain some sort of challenge…
“If Liverpool were to lose tonight they will only be four points behind. They’ve still got to go to Liverpool and City, so they could have a massive say in this.
“It has been amazing, but I don’t think they’ll do it and if they do it won’t be as big as when Leicester won.
“The shock factor would not be the same and the achievement wouldn’t be, but with what they’re competing against, and with what they’ve had to face this year with the stadium and people writing them off, I think it would be incredible.”
