Transfer news: Tottenham and Arsenal eyeing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter

Tottenham and Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.

The towering centre-back has helped the German club climb to second in the Bundesliga, seven points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenham and Arsenal are on the lookout for new defenders and Sky Sports claim Spurs tried to sign Ginter before he sealed a £14.8million move to Monchengladbach from Dortmund in 2017.

Spurs have activated one-year extensions in the contracts of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, whose deals now run until 2020, but could lose the latter this summer as he has a £25million release clause in his contract.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are in desperate need of centre-halves this summer.

They have lost Rob Holding to a serious knee injury, while Shkodran Mustafi has struggled for form and Laurent Koscielny has recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines.

Defensive injuries have also forced Arsenal boss Unai Emery to play full-backs Nacho Monreal and Stephan Lichtsteiner in the middle of defence.

The Gunners have conceded 36 league goals so far this term – the most of any top six club and Ginter, who has been capped 23 times by Germany, could shore up their leaky defence.
