Port Vale appoint John Askey as new manager until end of the season

John Askey has been appointed Port Vale manager until the end of the season, the League Two club have confirmed.

The former Macclesfield and Shrewsbury boss replaces Neil Aspin, who stepped down from the role last week.

The 54-year-old, who began his playing career as a trainee in Vale’s youth ranks, is joined by his assistant manager Dave Kevan.

Vale chief executive Colin Garlick told the club’s official website: “We wish John and Dave all the very best as they take up their new positions with the club.

“My staff and I will do all we can to support them and I ask all Valiants to do the same.

“I’d also like to thank Danny Pugh, Ronnie Sinclair and Michael Tonge for stepping in last week and working in a helpful and professional manner.”

Askey led Macclesfield to the National League title and promotion to the Football League last season.

Meanwhile, Vale are currently hovering above the League Two relegation zone after a poor run of just two wins in 12 games.
