Nathaniel Clyne being allowed to leave could cost Liverpool Premier League title, says Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton believes Jurgen Klopp’s decision to let Nathaniel Clyne leave could cost Liverpool the title.

Clyne joined Bournemouth on loan last month after falling behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez in the Anfield pecking order.

But injuries to Alexander-Arnold and Gomez have left the Reds short at right-back, forcing midfielders Jordan Henderson and James Milner to fill the void in back-to-back draws against Leicester and West Ham.

And Sutton, who won a Premier League title with Blackburn in 1995, is shocked there was no recall clause in Clyne’s loan deal.

“Liverpool’s lack of depth is alarming,” Sutton told the Daily Mail.

“Letting Clyne leave on loan – with no ability to recall him – is the biggest mistake Klopp has made at Liverpool. It could cost them the title.

“Milner did a valiant job at right back [against West Ham] but Liverpool missed his influence in midfield.

“Neither Adam Lallana nor Naby Keita turned up at West Ham, but they weren’t the only ones. How many times did Roberto Firmino misplace passes?”

Liverpool lead second-placed Manchester City by three points, but Pep Guardiola’s men could leapfrog their rivals if they beat Everton on Wednesday night.
