Liverpool team news: James Milner returns for West Ham clash but it’s bad injury news for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez

James Milner is set to return for Liverpool when they visit West Ham in the Premier League on Monday evening.

Milner, the Liverpool vice-captain, missed the 1-1 draw with Leicester earlier this week as he served a one-match suspension.

However, he is available again against the Hammers as Liverpool look to extend their lead at the top of the first division table.

There is not good news for Liverpool on the injury front, however, with two players definitely ruled out of the visit to the London Stadium.

Trent Alexander-Arnold remains on the sidelines, though Jurgen Klopp believes the England full-back should return to training next week.

“Trent is getting better and better and better,” Klopp said at a press conference. “He is really close and I hope he is in full training next week, but not for Monday.”

Fellow defender Joe Gomez is not so close to recovery in a further blow to the Reds.

The 21-year-old suffered a leg fracture at the beginning of December which was expected to keep him on the treatment table for six weeks.

However, it appears Gomez will be out of action for a longer period, with Klopp refusing to provide any return date for the youngster.

The German continued: “It is not exactly going how we want, that’s how it is. He needs more time. We will see exactly how we do it.

“There were different moments when we thought we could do this or that. It will take time. We cannot say more.”

There is also the chance Gomez may have to undergo surgery.

“I don’t know,” Klopp added on the possibility. “We will see. It is possible, probably.”

Due to Liverpool’s ongoing injury crisis, the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum have been used in defence over the past month.
