‘It’s a conspiracy’: talkSPORT host Adrian Durham blasts EFL over Leeds ‘Spygate’ statement

talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham has boldly alleged that the EFL are conspiring to disrupt Leeds’ promotion hopes.

United manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted to spying on his rivals’ training sessions after a member of his staff was caught at Derby last month, prompting the EFL and Football Association to launch an investigation.

On Friday, the EFL released an update statement, explaining that they needed more time to complete the investigation.

Upon seeing this, Adrian Durham decared: “I’ve got a theory and it’s not gonna be pleasant listening for anybody at the EFL.

“We are on the eve on the football weekend of course. Eight of the top eleven in the Championship play each other this weekend starting tonight.

“And I’m looking at it thinking, ‘Hang on a minute, why would you do that on the eve of a massive game that Leeds have got tomorrow where they take on Middlesbrough?’

“I think the whole thing is designed to disrupt Leeds United. It’s designed to disrupt Bielsa.

“If this was Frank Lampard in Bielsa’s position, would the EFL take this long?

“It’s a conspiracy to muck up Leeds’ chances of getting promotion, that’s how I feel about it.

“Why would you come out with a statement that basically says nothing, but delivers uncertainty for Leeds United – even more uncertainty for them – on the eve of such a huge game.

“This is four weeks since Frank Lampard brought it to everybody’s attention.”

Leeds have lost four of their last six Championship matches and as a result now dropped to second in the league table.

Amid this run of lacklustre form, the side have become embroiled in the ‘Spygate’ debacle and there is even talk that they could be lose further points as a punishment.

“I don’t agree with a points deduction, but it’s been talked about,” Durham continued on talkSPORT Drive.

“Now, if they’ve been looking for four weeks and they still need more time, then that actually suggests to me it’s gonna be quite a serious punishment.

“I cannot get my head around it. Are they gonna make up more rules so that by the time the rules are written into the constitution Bielsa has broken them, even though they weren’t there before?

“I can’t get my head around it, this was an easy one to deal with. You basically go and slap him on the wrist and say, ‘Don’t do it again otherwise there will be a serious punishment.’

“Then make the rules and do them properly like you should’ve done in the first place.”
