There is no way Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son could be a contender for Player of the Year, according to Adrian Durham, who has listed 29 players he believes are more worthy of the award this season.
The talkSPORT host said on Monday’s Drivetime show he ‘felt a little bit queasy’ after Match of the Day commentator Jonathan Pearce, host Gary Lineker and pundit Jermaine Jenas all waxed lyrical about the South Korean forward after watching his winning goal in Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Newcastle.
It’s been an incredible few months for Son, who has scored 11 goals for Tottenham since the start of December to help the club reignite their Premier League title bid.
He even missed three weeks of action to Asian Cup duty with South Korea, but made an immediate impact on his return to the Spurs team with two vital goals in wins over Watford and Newcastle.
Son’s winner against the Toon led to claims he is a major contender for the Player of the Year gong, but Adrian is not convinced.
Opinion: Why Son MUST be included on PFA shortlist
“Match of the Day made me feel a little bit queasy on Saturday night,” said the talkSPORT host on Monday’s Drivetime show.
“I do like Heung-Min Son as a player, he has improved enormously.
“However, up to December he had scored one Premier League goal and in that run Spurs lost four Premier League games, including against Man City and Liverpool – games which could prove crucial come the end of the season.
“He’s just missed three weeks putting country before club and he was so bad at Arsenal, in a massive game, that he was dragged off by Mauricio Pochettino.
“Remember we’re talking about a potential player of the season, the whole season. This doesn’t make him a bad player, but we’re talking about the Premier League’s best player this season.”
Adrian even went as far as to make a long list of players in the Premier League who deserve the PotY award more than Son this season (of course he did).
