David Beckham: LA Galaxy to unveil statue in honour of former player

David Beckham will have a statue unveiled next month in his honour by former club LA Galaxy.

The Major League Soccer side are paying tribute to the ex-England captain ahead of their season’s opener against Chicago Fire on March 2nd.

Galaxy confirmed the news after an email to season-ticket holders showed there will be a Beckham statue, and it is the first such honour to be bestowed among a player in the American top flight.

Beckham, 43, who is launching his own MLS side, is expected to attend Galaxy’s opening game.

The Manchester United legend was the first superstar name to join the league via its Designated Player Rule – which has now been branded “The Beckham Rule” – allowing high-profile players to earn more than the standard salary cap.

‘Golden Balls’ moved to Los Angeles in 2007 which paved the way for star-studded names including Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard to follow suit.

He won two MLS Cups as well as helping Galaxy claim Supporters Shield crowns in his time at the club.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star made 122 appearances for Galaxy, scoring 19 goals before finishing off his career with Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

As well as his project with Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, Beckham purchased a stake in Salford City, the non-league club run by fellow Class of ’92 members Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.
