Boyhood Everton fan Jon Walters wants Liverpool to win Premier League title and tells talkSPORT why

Boyhood Evertonian Jon Walters has told talkSPORT he is backing Liverpool to win the Premier League title this season.

The Burnley and Republic of Ireland international, currently on loan at Ipswich Town, was born in Merseyside and grew up as an ardent Toffees fans.

But while some Everton supporters will seemingly go to any length to thwart their red rivals’ title bid, Walters is hoping Liverpool bring the trophy back to Anfield.

Many Blues fans admitted they wanted their team to lose against Manchester City on Wednesday, because they didn’t want to do Liverpool a favour in the title race.

City ultimately won the game 2-0, so Toffees fans would have woken up happy on Thursday.

But Walters appears to one of the few Everton supporters who want their cross-town foes to be crowned champions this season.

“I grew up an Everton fan, but I would rather Liverpool win the title than Manchester City,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“I quite enjoy what Klopp brings to Liverpool, the way Liverpool play and what they’ve done over the last couple of years.

“I quite enjoy watching them.

“Saying that, I do like Man City, but being from the city of Liverpool I would rather Liverpool win the league than Man City.”

City’s victory over Everton saw them overtake Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference – for the time being, anyway.

Liverpool have a game in hand and, after conceding ground in the title race with back-to-back draws against Leicester and West Ham, Jurgen Klopp’s side can’t afford to lose any more points.

If they do let their once-seven point lead slip, it will be another oh-so near for the German boss, who is yet to win any silverware in four years with the Reds despite taking them to three cup finals.

And Walters added on talkSPORT: “Klopp has got to win something.

“He’s been at the club for a number of years now and with the money spent…

“I think he’s got to bring something to the club, he’s got to win something and with the position they’re in now, it’s in their hands.

“They’re joint top of the league wit ha game in hand and there are so many games until the end of the season, it’s for them to decide I think.”
