Arsenal news: Marc Overmars linked with return to Gunners as new director of football

Former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars is in line to become the new director of football at the Emirates, reports claim.

The 45-year-old currently occupies the same role at Ajax, who have denied any approach has been made.

However, it is understood Overmars is among the candidates under consideration due to his impressive CV and obvious link with the Gunners.

According to the Daily Mail, the Dutchman is one of the front runners for the job alongside Roma’s transfer guru Monchi.

Overmars has an excellent track record with transfers; most recently, he sold Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona for £65million after signing him from Willem II for just £900,000.

He also engineered Davinson Sanchez’s £42million move to Tottenham in 2016 after signing him for £4million earlier that year.

Arsenal head of football Raul Sanllehi reportedly wants an executive who can liaise with Unai Emery and discuss tactics in order to impose a clear philosophy throughout the club.

Overmars knows Sanllehi having spent four years at Barcelona as a player.

Other candidates for the job include Monchi, who worked with Emery at Sevilla, as well as Edu, another former Arsenal star, although it seems he has been persuaded to stay in his current role with the Brazilian FA.
